Resourcing
Resourcing is a preparation/stabilization approach often used in EMDR-informed work. The idea is to strengthen access to positive internal states before (or instead of) addressing difficult material.
What resourcing can help with
Section titled “What resourcing can help with”Resourcing can support:
- a stronger sense of calm or steadiness
- feeling safer in your body
- improved emotional regulation
- faster recovery after stress
- more confidence in coping skills
These benefits vary by person and context. This is a gentle practice, not a guarantee.
A simple resourcing flow
Section titled “A simple resourcing flow”-
Choose a resource type
Calm, Safety, Comfort, Wisdom… or a custom one. -
Choose a source
A person you trust, a place, a memory, a character, a time period, or a part of yourself. -
Let the feeling become felt
Notice where it shows up in your body. Don’t force it. -
Follow the bilateral movement
Keep it light. If you drift, return to the resource. -
End with a gentle “lock-in”
Notice what’s different: breath, posture, tension, mood.
Keep it safe (and useful)
Section titled “Keep it safe (and useful)”- If anything starts to feel too intense, stop and ground yourself.
- Keep sessions short when you’re learning (e.g., 1–5 minutes).
- If working with trauma or PTSD, do this under the guidance of a qualified clinician.
